Quilting Inspiration and Zig Zaggy Hexies

hexcloseupWhere do you find inspiration for your quilts? Is it fabric driven – that GORGEOUS new floral print at the local quilt shop? Or is it pattern driven? The new magazine that just came out, or your best friend told you about the new patterns ‘just in’ at the fabric store? A new quilting book?

After quilting for more than 20 years, I can tell you that inspiration for quilts can come from anywhere. The logo on a box of pasta, the tile floor, a garden, and yes from fabric, magazines and books.

I wanted to make a hexagon quilt, but the thought of stitching ALL those hexies together didn’t thrill me. So, I zig-zagged them together on a base. I liked how it turned out, here is the whole quilt –

It’s an option if you don’t want to sew hexies together, but I know there are scads of you who love to stitch hexies. I’m half-way into that boat. I’ve done some small projects, but not a whole quilt.

And that is the extent of my hexie piecing. I’d love to do more, but I’d love to do more of a lot of things. So far my requests for extra hours in the day have gone unnoticed.

And back to the topic of quilt inspiration – I have a few links to share that should get those creative juices flowing. Let me know what you think!

http://www.artmonument.ru/portfolio/?category=5 – this site is in Russian (or something) but you don’t need to know it to love the pictures they’ve collected. So many of them scream ‘Quilts!’. Explore!

Hugs n’ Kisses – This is a GORGEOUS BOM by Helen Stubbings. I adore all of her work but this is one of my favorites. I had the privilege of meeting her sister – equally talented – at Quilt Market one year (sorry don’t remember the year). A lovely woman, she was very friendly. I wish I’d had hours to sit and visit with her.

I think I’ll just send you to my Pinterest Quilt board for the rest. It’d be easier 🙂

Are you addicted to hexies? What’s the biggest project you’ve done using hexies? If you don’t do hexies (or even if you do) what’s your favorite inspiration place/site/book etc.?
